Speargrass Flat Residence was designed for a couple and their two children. Leading busy lives the home had to offer both comfort and flexibility of space for guests as well as the possibility to set up an office. The home was set in an open field so needed to suit the open country terrain while understand the planting and landscape that would follow to integrate the home with the land. The main wing and garage block took on a more traditional form while the bedroom block sits lower and is more private in both its nature and construct. There are movable slatted screens to close it down and filter light and it has a softness being fully clad with cedar slats. It was referred to as the ‘haybale’ alongside the more traditional form.
